"Wanderer? Where did you go?!"
River did not even stop. His stride remained steadfast yet quick, dashing gracefully down the rocky slopes of the mountain trails. The smell of burning wood still stung his nose and the air was thick with ash that it alone nearly made River asphyxiate. More than once River was forced to divert his path due to deceased and scorched creatures littered upon the mountainside.
The fire had been an accident, that River knew as fact. He could only condemn those who had started it, those whom the wind brought River to so that they may be saved from their own damnation. Many of their actions merely reflected that of self gratitude once safety seemed apparent. Only few among them were worth River's time and assistance. The matter was altogether infuriating.
River came to the foot of the mountains in a matter of minutes, where he sat with great exhaustion beneath a tall pine tree. He rubbed his face, covering his hand in soot and dried blood, then sighed. The nerve of people, especially those he'd met, never ceased to amaze him. It was then that River's hand reached into his pocket almost subconsciously and took hold of cold metal and crystal. Yes, the nerve of some people, River thought as he chuckled.
It had been near a month since River departed from the Wolfheart kingdom with his new trinket. He pulled out the ruby necklace, memories of that one night dancing upon the surface of the crimson gem. Memories of Selene. He still could remember the flow of her snow woven hair and the glint of her pure sapphire eyes. How amazing that, even though they'd met only once for such a short time, she had left such an impression on River.
But, as always, the pendant seemed to feel ten times heavier whenever River began to reminisce about the beautiful princess. The necklace was a promise, one that require him to do something he'd never done before: and that was seeing a familiar face just once more. When he first received the accursed chain, River had half a mind to rid himself of its heavy burden and be done with it. He only ended up holding onto it tighter.
He leaned his back and closed his eyes, listening to the flow of wind as it beckoned him onward to his next destination. Pine, earth, and even remnants of the charred forest life saturated the air and blew across River's face. Somewhere off in the distance he could make out the soft currents of running water. A stream. Like the one that flowed through Wolfheart territory.
River opened his eyes. Then, after another moment's deliberation, he climbed to his feet and headed towards the stream. Where there was a stream, there was a bed of water at the end of it. A perfect place to get the smell of smoke out his clothes and hair. Maybe, too, as he placed the pendant safely back in his pocket, River could finally fulfill this burden- no, not his burden. His promise.
Selene walked calmly through the trees, finding ease in the nature around her. How many times had she walked her kingdoms grounds searching for River? She sighed. She was never going to see him again. He was gone for good, wasn't he? Yet, in the past month, she couldn't help but be filled with even a small glimmer of hope that she would run into him.
ReplyDeleteSince she met him, a side of her that she thought long dead was awakened. She demanded her father to relinquish the need for her escort, claiming she was old enough to defend herself. Even though he proved stubborn, she won in the end through patience... and threatening to leave with the first man she met. Of course, that had quickly grabbed her fathers attention, and since he did not want a repeat of her sister, Sakura, he quickly agreed to the terms so long as she reported back to him frequently. Good thing he was always too busy to remember that part of the deal.
The soft chirping of a bird above drew her attention to the growing density of the plants and wildlife. There must be a stream near by. And sure enough, the calming rhythm of running water grew louder as she approached the clear waters. She smiled to herself. A stream. . . almost like a small river. . . She shook her head.
Stop it, Selene. Just forget about him. But she couldn't. She reached up to play with her ruby pendant only to remember she had given it to him. And in hopes that he would return it, she only allowed herself a simple ribbon to hide the scar she so desperately hid away.
Selene followed the streams current ,lost in thought, jumping lightly from rock to rock. The wind blew gently around her and she closed her eyes against the feel of it against her skin. How many times had she wished the feather touch was that of her River?
She paused, oh, now he was _her_ River? She exhaled in frustration. He belonged to no one and he never would, that much she knew.
Ugh. Stop moping and get it together Selene! You have a small fraction of freedom, so have fun, enjoy it!
Finding resolve in her small encouragement boost, Selene's steps grew even more eagerly as she neared the end. She noted how the stream grew wider as it neared towards what looked like a lake. Well, perhaps a swim would clear her mind. She quickly snapped her armor off, letting it fall around her and splash into the cool water. Her steps never slowed in the least as she stripped to her undergarments only. . .
She saw the ripples of disturbed water reach the mouth of the stream. The delicate sound of water lapping around a moving object reached her ears before she turned her attention to the source.
ReplyDeleteThe blood in her veins suddenly felt as if it had been alit with fire. She stumbled to a halt, nearly losing her footing against the wet muddied ground.
"It can't be." Her voice was a mere whisper against the sounds of the soft rustle of trees. And yet there he was, RIGHT THERE. NAKED.
She didn't even notice as her breath picked up because her eyes were focused solely on the man before her. River. . . The drops of water skimmed across his bare flesh, across hard muscle and down below where it was hidden underneath a line of water. She watched tentatively as his movements caused the flex of taunt muscle. Oh heavens above, the warrior was sex incarnated.
"Oh gods." She managed to croak with a rough voice.
It was loud enough however, to draw the attention of the breath taking male. As soon as those familiar yellow eyes locked with her Selene lost all feeling in her legs . .either that or she literally forgot how to walk. Her arms shot out before her in a sad attempt to stop herself from slipping on the ground in a tangle of limbs and fall straight into the murky waters of the lake. She scrambled to set herself upright, her arms uselessly pushing her up all the while trying to cover her near nakedness. She was nothing but a blubbering, stuttering mess at that point.
"Oh, gods. I-I... I'm S-sorry. I- Um. Oh.. Oh gods." Never had the overwhelming need to run ever overtaken her with such a ferocity as it did now, and yet, she couldn't help but stare sheepishly at him. Amusement danced across his sinful eyes as he waded towards her.
"No!" She held her hands up as if to stop his advances. "Sweet mother, please p-put some muscl- clothes! Cl-clothes on! Sex- oh gods." She clamped her mouth shut even as something deep inside her awoke. Desire claimed her heart at that moment and she wanted nothing more than to taste every inch of that forbidden skin. Oh gods, help her.
Well, speak of the devil. Except in this case the term "angel" would've more appropriate in this instance. River chewed subtly on his lip, biting down on the urge to laugh at the "graceful" princess fervently re-applying her armor without so much as a glance his way. Her skin was already fair but in the short amount of time granted to River, there was nothing more alluring than the look of her bare legs and slender torso bearing that soft skin. Coming back was proving to be less of a burden after all.
ReplyDeleteA few string of murmured curses came his way and River couldn't help but chuckle. Selene only ignored him more, a red blush painting her cheeks. "Selene-"
"Oh jeez," she groaned, her voice shaky. "Don't, just... Don't say my name like that! Not while you're..." Selene waved her hand in his direction, but in doing so she dropped the rest of her armor as it fell to the ground in entanglement of metal plates. She sighed profusely. "Just, don't talk to me until you're decent! Please!"
River raised his eyebrows but otherwise did not refute. It was tempting to continue pestering the princess and watch her fidget impotently but it seemed that Selene was further distressing herself with every quick flash of her eyes to peek at River. Every several seconds her eyes were trained on him, as though putting him under her scrutiny would prevent him from disappearing again. River shook his head and smiled. She really was impossible.
River made his way towards shore, noting how Selene's movements were enacted much more calmly as a result of his compliance. She shifted with every glance back to him, keeping her front to him at all times. Finally, River stepped onto the grassy bank of the lake as he emerged from the water with a loud splash. It drew Selene's attention fully, evident in the way River could just make out a stifled "oh fuck" as she surely realized that they were only several yards apart.
The urge to look over and see the expression on Selene's face was barely contained.
River reached over to his clothes hanging on nearby branches, somewhat disgruntled that they were still very much damp. Now, of all times, was when River really needed a fire. He loosely threw on the inner layer of his robes, the wet fabric instantly clinging to his skin and bunching at the belt around his waist. River sighed and set the outer layer back on the branches and give more time to dry. He gathered his hair and he tied it into a low ponytail, hearing a small sigh off in the distance. River's eyes glanced back up to Selene's for the first time since she came upon him several moments ago. Her beautiful sapphire eyes were slightly glazed as though not processing that he was truly there. She had managed to put her armor back on, although her hair was disheveled and her composure was slacking. River forgot how amusing the wolf princess truly was.
ReplyDelete"Well, Selene-" Selene blinked rapidly and cleared her throat, her attention now fully focused upon River "- I am 'decent', as you-"
"That's..." she averted her gaze, her lips tightly closed. "... I hardly consider what you've adorned as 'decent'-"
"I could shed my clothes if you would prefer that, then."
Selene's eyes, wide from shock, snapped back to River's. He couldn't refrain a small smile. "I- that's not- it's-! River, that is NOT what I meant. You're, you're, uh... r-robes are... Why are you're clothes wet?"
"Went for a swim," River motioned with a wave of his hand. "Turns out my robes weren't good swim-wear so I decided to skinny-dip instead."
Selene's jaw nearly fell to the floor. River rolled his eyes. "I was washing them, obviously. Although, smoke is hard to get out of clothes with just water alone." River shifted his shoulder, a weak yet prominent smell of damp smoke still caked deep within the fabric. He subconsciously touched his temple, the small area burned by the flames tender to any form of contact. That fire was turning out to be more trouble than it was worth.
"Smoke?" came Selene's voice as it cut across River's train of thought. "You were in a fire?"
River grinned. "Don't worry, Princess." He extended his hand back to the branches where his clothes were hanging and off to the side towards a red shining stone on a silver chain. With great care, River retrieved the item and held it out in his hand to Selene. "You're pendant's intact. I didn't forget that promise of yours."
She stared at the pendant for the longest time. Taking it meant so much more than just him having fulfilled a promise. It meant that there was a possibility that this would really be the last time she'd see him. She had nothing much more to offer him to make him find her. . . but then again, he hadn't been looking for her, had he? This was a chance meeting.
ReplyDeleteAs she strapped the last of her armor onto her body, she managed to stand on surprisingly steady feet and close the distance between them.
"Thank you." She forced herself to smile as she took the stone into her hands. "You are a man of your word."
His deep throated chuckle had her turning an inquisitive gaze towards him.
"Your eyes betray you, Princess. You do not seem happy in the slightest at my return of your property."
She sighed, placing the object safely in her grip rather than replacing it around her neck. It was light out, and though she hoped it was too dark for him to have noticed her scar during their last time together, she really did not want to risk him knowing for sure. It was something she was very self conscious about.
It took her several moments to replay as she tried to keep the thoughts of his naked body out of her mind. Dear gods who shaped the earth, whomever made him took their time in sculpting every muscle on that body.
"I'm not. " She finally answered earnestly. She shifted closer to him instead of further, which was something that surprised her. She had intended to clearly move away from him, but whatever had a hold of her then apparently did not want that to happen.
Suddenly the air seemed too thin for her to breathe. The heat of his body was inviting, the scent of pure male lured her in and washed any sane thought out of her mind. And she did not miss the fact that he did nothing to push her away or discourage her advances. Neither did he do anything to encourage her but she pushed those thoughts away.
"Although, I could say that your returning it in your near nakedness was appealing." Oh my, what was she _saying_? Her head swam with an uncontrollable urge she couldn't identify. Her sudden daringness to speak her mind snuck up from behind her and left her feeling a bit light headed.
"Is that all you wanted then? It was never really about the return of your pendant but of seeing me naked?"
A fierce blush bloomed over Selene's cheeks, but she didn't shy away from it. Instead she grinned, surprising it seems, both herself and River.
"I can't say it was a downside."
He offered a cocky grin in return. "You just wanted me for my body then."
She tisked at him, "Careful River, your ego is showing."
"A lot more than my ego was showing a few moment ago, Selene. I think I'll be fine."
She laughed as he motioned towards the thin robing he was wearing. How could he make her laugh so easily?
It took her a few moments to finally settle down, the small remnants of her laugh evident in her smile as she focused on him once more. "I was hoping you would actually want to return it. It appears as though you could have cared less whether or not you found me." She ran her thumb over the smooth surface of the stone in her hand as she ripped her gaze away from his questioning eyes and looked towards the calm ripples of the lakes surface.
It was River, this time, who broke the silence. "What makes you think that?"
ReplyDelete"You're no where near my homeland." She paused as he tensed. "Not that I expected you to be."She added quickly, "I know you travel and go wherever you wish." She couldn't help bit of admiration that slipped into her voice. He did exactly what she wished she could do.
"You really are impossible." He mumbled softly.
She laughed, "Yes. I am." In that moment, she made a decision. If this might really be the last time, she would at least be herself with him. In this fleeting moment, she would be the carefree, rebellious, daring wolf she was always meant to be. Before years of restraint and control could convince her otherwise, Selene did the one thing that was denied her for so long; she took what she wanted.
She didn't know just how amazing it would be until her lips met River's. The sudden surge of adrenaline made her body shake with anticipation. Her hand reached up to tangle in the strands of his long dark hair. It was soft in her hands, and for whatever reason she wanted those strands to flow freely over his broad shoulders. She could only imagine what it would be like to clutch to that hair as he claimed her over and over again.
Of course, she knew it would never happen. No, all she would get was this kiss and it was the only thing she expected from him. She pulled away, noting how breathless she was left by this simple act.
River's response was unreadable. He merely stood there. His body didn't move, his eyes bore into hers with no detectable emotion. Her only condolence really was that he hadn't outright rejected her or voice his disapproval of her actions. She could live with that.
"You'll have to forgive me. I simply did not want to part ways without at least stealing a kiss." She'd intended to sound confident but her voice betrayed her as it came out in a breathless whisper. She bit her lip as she tried to gage any response from him, but as it proved, she could find none. Only that something flashed across the yellow glow of his eyes but it disappeared as quickly as it appeared.
She shook her head and pushed away from him.
"I can get the smell of smoke out of your clothing, if you'd let me."She didn't wait for an answer however, she just took the robes hanging from the nearby branch and walked into the dense shrubbery of the forest around them.
River watched as Selene disappeared into the forest and did not move his sights from where she departed long after she was gone. Things like the soft breeze of the wind calling to him and the shivering cool of his inner robe against his bare skin was left forgotten. He could perhaps stand there a hundred years and still be unable to fathom what transpired; why this all felt so different than anything River had ever experienced before. He barely caught himself grinning after subconsciously licking his lips.
ReplyDeleteSo that's what she tasted like. If River was none the wiser, he would've guessed that he had just kissed smooth silk.
He turned his gaze back over to the lake's surface as it shone bright in the afternoon sun. River would've been lying if he told Selene that he had no intention of crossing paths with her again and it was this fact in mind that he did not refute any of her allegations. Already the absence of the pendant's weight felt strange. River could leave at any moment without the looming burden of his promise keeping his feet on the ground and the wind would lead him across the world and back. River could never guess where it would take him next; to the waterways of Venice, Italy perhaps? Maybe the mountainous forts of Switzerland or the barren deserts of Africa? Or would it guide him to a place long since forgotten throughout River's travels? Someplace, like, say...
"... A spring," River murmured aloud.
"Sorry?"
River blinked and looked over his shoulder to find that Selene had returned. She stepped forward, robe in her arms, and came to stand beside him. Her eyes never left his.
He smiled. "Reminiscing," he stated simply. It became quiet for a while. God only knew what possessed River to add, "One of the very first things I came upon during my travels was a spring. It was small and relatively unknown, but... it was the most remarkable thing I'd ever seen."
"Oh? Where-?" Selene broke off and averted her gaze. A flash in her eyes revealed all River needed to know about her hesitation. He didn't blame her, incidentally. River himself couldn't understand why he let something more than a one-worded answer slip by... or why he continued to do so now.
"It's not far from here, at the foot of the mountain pass several miles east," River proceeded. "It's out of the way on a dirt road so it is not frequently visited. A shame, really, because it's such a unique landmark. The entire basin of the spring is lined with amethyst crystals that, when the sunlight hits it just right, the water turns a captivating shade of lilac. Moments like those are so few and far between, however, so it remains a dark, ominous shade of purple... earning it the nickname Shadow Springs."
ReplyDeleteRiver fell silent, a mental block suddenly impeding the rest of his story. The instinct to push away, to shut out, finally reared it's head and ensnared River in its grasp. He cleared his throat and motioned for the robe still within Selene's hands. She gave it over hesitantly, her expectant gaze quickly replaced with a more formal expression.
River's brow drew together and he inclined his head toward the forest. "Did you abandon your royal guard again?"
Selene rolled her eyes. "Yes, River, because I do that every time before I run into you."
"Clearly, although I wouldn't have tried swimming into an enclosed body of water to try and get away."
"Well, running away from a guard I requested to stay behind at my father's castle wasn't the reason I came to this lake."
"Really? Then what was, Princess?" River asked.
Selene opened her mouth but no words came out. She bowed her head slightly, a small smile forming on her lips. "Just... I just felt like it... that's all."
River raised an eyebrow and muffled a chuckle. He forgot how much he missed the way the blood flushed Selene's cheeks.
"When did you, ah," Selene piped up suddenly. "... When did you find that spring?"
River tilted his head, amused. "Are you curious to see it, Selene?"
The princess blinked. "I didn't say that."
"You didn't have to," River replied as winked at her.
Selene sighed out an exasperated laugh as she shook her head. River shrugged. "Up to you, Princess. How about it? Feeling adventurous today?"
It took every single ounce of restraint to not seem like a small excited child, and even more not to scream out 'Yes!' at the top of her lungs. In fact, she was quite proud of herself as she allowed herself to smile and answer with only a small shake of excitement in her voice, "Yes, I thought you would never ask."
ReplyDeleteRiver nodded before turning to finish dressing himself and strapping his sword around his waist. In about ten minutes they were off to their destination.
Selene felt absolutely giddy with anticipation as she followed River's lead through the thick spacing of nature. She felt like a child as she paused to look at something she'd never seen before. She was grateful when River would humor her by explaining or offering some partake of information on all the various new wildlife.
"Oh!" She exclaimed as her gaze found a small patch of wild flowers growing in between two massive boulders. They were unlike anything she'd ever seen before, just another indication of just how little she had explored the worlds wonders.
It's petals were long and arched, it could almost be considered elegant the way the plant sprouted out between the two masses. They were such a contrast of color. Red veins spidered along a snow white background of the petals that spouted out the long neck of its stem. The body of the plant grew far and low to the ground, the only parts that branched up and out were the flowers themselves. They seemed almost as if they were reaching for the warmth of the sun through the shade of the boulders.
"You've never seen Murder Weed?"
She glanced away from the beautiful white and red flower. "Murder weed? Why would it be called that?" It sounded. . . horrible.
He smiled and walked to stand next to her. He indicated with his hand at the long stem of the flower. "Don't be fooled. It's very dangerous. It's vibrant in color to attract many kinds of animals, mostly smaller rodents. Once the animals is close enough to sniff or try to take a bite. . ." As if to demonstrate he poked the large petal of the weed and instantly a long, sharp, needle-like spike shot out. Selene jumped at the sudden revelation, her eyes widened in wonder as she noted the slight movement of that weapon as if the plant was seeking out it's victim.
"I hardly think that's enough to murder an animal. . . wouldn't it just run away?" She forced herself to look away from the thing only to be surprised by just how close she was to River. His eyes stared at her expectantly, the corner of his lips twitching up into a smile.
Oh. . . she cleared her throat as she realized she had jumped towards him when the plant had startled her. Why?
She blushed as she took a few steps away from him. "Oh. . . sorry."
"Don't apologize." He shrugged nonchalantly. "I would jump towards me too if I were frightened."
Selene scoffed. "There's that ego again."
River laughed. The sound of it was oddly calming to Selene, it relaxed her in a way she never felt in her years with her family. Always having to watch her tone, her words, the way she acted. Every aspect of her life had been controlled her entire childhood.
She grinned at River. "Come on, or we'll get there at nightfall and I won't get to see the glow of the spring. You wouldn't want to disappoint me, would you?"
"Of course not. We wouldn't want you throwing a tantrum."
She turned a deadly glare at him. "Just go."
River bowed mockingly before turning on his heel and continuing the journey.
Selene followed in silence before mumbling, "I don't throw tantrums."
River lowered his head but it did nothing to prevent the corners of his lips from rising, if only a little. The wind whistled gently in his ear; a soft reminder of the reason River was bothering to escort Selene to the spring in the first place. River shut his eyes, focusing on the distinct rustling of foliage behind him as the princess followed close behind. How quickly she jumped at the offer to see a piece of himself, how foolishly she trusted him with reserve truly was astonishing. She made it seem as though he were pure.
ReplyDeleteRiver shook his head and rolled his shoulders. He motioned towards Selene with his hand while his eyes remained trained upon the trail up ahead. "This way, Princess. We're almost there."
Selene hummed in response but otherwise said nothing.
The last few steps from out of the brush and trees landed the pair of them directly on a dirt path that snaked it's way up through dirt and large, mountainous forests. River turned away from the mountain path and faced the opposite direction to the right, where a shallow walkway of gravel curled around and disappeared behind a large boulder on the left. River advanced to the dirt road without a word, pausing only once as he placed his hand upon the boulder's surface.
Of course there would be no indication that he had been there before. The rains of years gone by had seen to that. He turned his gaze skyward, squinting against the afternoon sun. The star would reach evening soon. It was almost time. River looked back to Selene for the first time since the encounter with the Murder Weed. At once he noticed her eyes filled with wonder and beneath that veil lied a hint of excitement.
This was a mistake. That much was obvious. Only, River couldn't tell which part of this entire ordeal was the error of his actions.
Without further delay, River extended his hand to Selene (who took it with more fervor than she realized, going by the look in her gaze), and lead the princess around the bend of the dirt path to the other side of the boulder.
Bright light that danced upon the surface of the spring's water instantly glared upon the both of them with it's brilliance, so much so that it was nearly blinding. The water churned with heat from down below the earth's crust, making steam rise from the wakes and clouding the spring in a thick mist. Even so, the distinct purple hue saturating the seemingly pitch black of the spring could easily be seen. It was by no means elegant but it was beautiful, as is with most things in nature.
"Oh, River," came Selene's voice, cutting through the silence like a blissful song. "It's lovely."
River grinned. "Was it worth the trip, Your Highness?"
Selene stepped forward to the basin's edge and kneeled down as she gazed into its depths. She reached down with a delicate hand into the violet waters. "It doesn't even feel like water, but more like warm air, I'd say... How did you find this place?"
ReplyDeleteRiver remained silent. The extent of the hush that fell between them prompted Selene to glance his way, the blue of her eyes guarded yet soft. River had to force himself to stay stagnant. How... did it come to be like this?
"... I was near death when I came upon this spring," River lamented. "Farther up the mountain trail was a world tainted in blood and carnage and I spent many a day down here wondering why I was allowed to live and they were not... why I was insufficient in protecting my comrades from my curse."
Selene had risen to her feet by this point and was facing River fully, with her hand drawn close to her chest. She looked upon him wholeheartedly and he returned it in earnest. Yes, thought River. She needs to hear this.
"Misfortune rained down upon all those who crossed my path and it wrapped around the innocent like a noose. Do not believe it is merely a truth of just my past, Selene. It occurs still to this day. I have since learned to redirect my attention to provide good to combat the bad... I do, however, stand by the vows I made here all those years ago, at this very spring and within those very waters."
The rays of the descending sun fell beneath a layer of clouds, soaking the oncoming twilit sky with an undertone of gray. Shadows of the surrounding rock faces grew blurry as the light all but vanished, leaving the world barer and more open than before. Even still, the warmth of the spring wrapped around its two guests in a misty blanket of security.
"... I travel alone," River continued after a moment's quiet. Then, he added, "and I never meet the same person twice."
At this, Selene blinked. "But you did with me." She paused before proceeding haughtily, "Why? You've been making it plainly clear that you did not wish to see me again and yet here you are! What makes me so different then, hmm?"
River studied the princess with great scrutiny before sighing, defeatedly. If a small smile made its way to his lips, he did not take notice. "Why, indeed? That is the question, isn't it? One that I hold no answer to... and the one to which I'm afraid I just may want to find it."
